Total shipments of smartphones has doubled compared to last year. The increase was triggered by the increasingly widespread production Android-based smartphone.
Although Symbian still occupy the first position in the mobile phone operating system market, Apple's iPhone sales were also increasing. At least so the data presented research firm Gartner.
"In the third quarter, the number of smartphones reached 81 million units sold. This figure is equal to one-fifth of the total number of mobile phones sold worldwide this quarter," according to Gartner research, as quoted by PC World, on Thursday (11/11/2010) .
Gartner explained, Symbian has sold approximately 29.5 million units of smartphones in the third quarter, up than a year ago that only 18.3 million units. While Android is in second place with a number of approximately 20.5 million units, an increase of approximately 1.4 million units a year ago.

With this amount, the gap between Symbian and Android market increasingly thin. Android smartphone market rose 25.5 percent this quarter compared to 3.5 percent last year, while the Symbian market must be willing to come down from 44.6 percent to 36.6 percent.
Although Apple has sold approximately 13.5 million units of the iPhone but its market share still fell, from 17.1 percent to only 16.7 percent this year. IPhone Operating System (IOS) occupied the third position in the mobile OS market.
While the Blackberry OS shrink into fourth position with sales of approximately 11.9 million units. In the end, Microsoft Windows Mobile came in fifth with 2.8 percent market share.
"The number of mobile units which successfully marketed, not just smartphones, to reach 417 million units, an increase of approximately 35 percent," said Gartner Research VP, Carolina Milanesi.
The order for the five leading handset vendors in a row are Nokia, Samsung, LG, Apple and RIM.
